You can give a business user a beautiful dashboard. You can't make them check it every day. Enova, a Chicago-based online lending company serving 14 million-plus consumer and small business customers, faced this exact challenge.  

On paper, Enova's mature, highly sophisticated BI ecosystem offered advanced reporting and dashboarding capabilities that should have helped teams make faster, more confident decisions. But in reality, users could not continuously monitor every metric, filter, campaign, and business segment. 

As Samundar Singh, Solution Architect of Enterprise BI, explained: 

“You give a nice-looking dashboard to your customers or users, and there are a hundred filters in there. Do we expect everybody to check at every state or campaign level? It's not feasible every day."

Dashboards can't prevent metric drift on their own

At first glance, the issue seemed clear: Enova's finance, accounting, operations, and marketing teams all relied on BI dashboards, but didn't track them consistently.

Once Enova's technical architects examined the problem more closely, they found that the dashboards themselves were not the constraint. The problem was that users had to open them, inspect the relevant views, notice a change, and determine what to do next.

Without regular dashboard updates, the metrics users saw could fall out of step with current business conditions. If users didn't log in, refresh the dashboard, or review the right combination of filters, outdated insights could persist across teams and organizational levels.

That created metric drift: a growing gap between what was happening in the business and what decision-makers could see in their dashboards.

What is metric drift, and why does it matter?

Metric drift occurs when reported KPIs no longer reflect current business conditions because dashboards, filters, or underlying views are not refreshed and reviewed consistently. The underlying definition may still be correct, but the value presented is outdated, incomplete, or no longer aligned with real-time performance.

Turning dashboard alerts into an accountability loop

Enova leveraged Strategy’s enterprise dashboards, specifically the native alerting system, and connected it directly to Slack, the application teams used in their day-to-day work. When a KPI crosses a defined threshold, the dashboard fires an instant alert into the relevant Slack channel.

This moved critical changes out of a passive dashboard and into an active workflow. Stakeholders no longer had to rely on someone remembering to open the right dashboard, select the right filters, and notice the issue in time.

But Enova went further, building an "accountability loop" on top of the automated alerts.

  • Users respond to each Slack alert with one of a few designated emoji reactions.
  • The emojis flagged whether the reaction was informational or actionable.
  • A Slack workflow captured those reactions and wrote them into a Google Sheet.
  • The sheet fed back into Strategy as a real-time dashboard tracking every alert, who received it, and whether they responded.

Strategy identified the issue. Slack brought it into the team's existing workflow. The response was recorded. Strategy then gave leaders a live view of what happened next.

Enova's objective was clear from the start: surface important changes sooner, route them to the right people, and make the response visible and accountable.

Enova built a new way to ensure accountability and confirm how its users acted on each alert. The organization now monitors 150+ metrics across 120 active users. Since the tracking dashboard went live, response rates to alerts increased by 30 percent.

The system reduced metric drift by surfacing changes sooner and routing them to the people responsible for investigating them. It also gave leaders clearer visibility into whether an alert had been acknowledged and what action followed.

“We're saving hundreds of hours because users no longer need to manually check every combination of filters. This system catches issues immediately.”

The Future: Integrating AI-powered anomaly detection

Enova aims to expand its alerting ecosystem. Strategy's AI agents are next in line, with the goal of helping teams understand why a metric dipped once it's already been flagged. The long-term plan is to allow users to ask a specific question directly against the dashboard and get a root-cause analysis: what caused the metric to change, where the answer came from, and which governed data supports it.

As Enova continues to extend the governed, trusted approach across more use cases, Strategy Mosaic is also supporting future analytics and AI projects.
